Removal of Weir Restores Tidal Flow

8 December 2025

The historical weir at Currumbin Eco-Parkland has been successfully removed, with Economic Development Queensland completing the works in November 2025. Shaping Australia Group carried out the demolition and bank stabilisation, ensuring all materials were safely removed and disposed of in compliance with environmental requirements.

The weir had restricted tidal flows and blocked fish passage, disrupting the watercourse’s natural function and limiting opportunities for aquatic species to breed, feed and shelter. Identified in the Ecological Restoration Plan as a key barrier to the creek’s health, its removal was essential to restoring resilience. With the weir gone, fish and aquatic life now have improved passage and mangroves are expected to recolonise the banks naturally. These changes will enhance local habitats, improve waterway health, and support a thriving ecosystem in the years to come.
