The Queensland Government is transforming the 4.5‑hectare site adjacent to the current Townsville (Pimlico) TAFE into a new residential community under the nation‑leading Land Activation Program. The project is expected to deliver up to 150 homes, helping address housing needs in Townsville and supporting the region’s continued growth.

Demolition works are under way to clear vacant and disused buildings on the site to get the site ready for development, with land release to market scheduled for mid 2026. Once demolition wraps up, Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) will move into enabling infrastructure works so a development partner can get started and help ensure more Queenslanders have a place to call home.

Right in the heart of Pimlico, the site offers a rare opportunity to create a well‑connected, accessible residential neighbourhood that meets the needs of locals now and into the future.

The site sits adjacent to the Townsville TAFE site which was opened in 2020. The former Pimlico TAFE site is now no longer needed and is being under-utilised, making it a prime candidate for the Queensland Government’s Land Activation Program.

Key Features

  • A 4.5‑hectare site in the heart of Pimlico, centrally located and close to essential services.
  • Capacity for up to 150 homes, offering a mix of housing options to meet local demand.
  • Transforming under‑utilised, government‑owned land into a thriving residential community.
  • Supporting local jobs and economic growth through strong, innovative partnerships.

What Happens Next

EDQ is leading this important project and is now inviting potential proponents to register their interest via EDQ’s website. A formal Request for Offers (RFO) process will be launched mid-2026 to secure the right proponent with the right vision for the site and the community.

We will continue to keep the community updated as planning and development progresses. To stay in the loop, make sure to follow this Pimlico Development project page.
