BMD CONSTRUCTION UPDATE - Street Renewal Program

Construction Activities: April 2026

Welcome to the April 2026 Construction Update of the Northshore Hamilton Street Renewal Program (SRP). The SRP is being constructed by BMD and will prepare the western end of the precinct (adjacent to Portside Wharf) for six new development lots planned for mixed-use residential development in accordance with the Northshore Hamilton PDA Development Scheme.

Construction of Stage 1 and Stage 2 Work Zones, shown in the map below, will continue throughout 2026.

Stages 1 and 2

Activities across other work zones

Other construction activities to support the delivery of the SRP will be undertaken throughout the Northshore Hamilton precinct outside of the Stage 1 and 2 Work Zones, including moving materials and equipment between work zones, surveying and installing underground services and environmental monitoring. Some of these intermittent activities will involve temporary traffic control and detours.

For your safety, when moving around the precinct please follow the direction of signage and traffic controllers.

Wharf Street

Throughout April, gas line relocation and road adjustment activities will occur at Wharf Street. This work is being planned to minimise disruptions wherever possible, with close coordination alongside the Duet Portside construction project at the site on the southwestern corner of MacArthur Avenue and Wharf Street.

Gas line relocation work will be undertaken throughout April and will take approximately one week to complete. To safely carry out this work, a lane closure is required, and traffic flow will be reduced to a single lane under traffic control. Please follow the direction of signage and traffic control during this period. No service disruption is expected.

Wharf Street cul-de-sac

Mid to late April, the cul-de-sac at the southern end of Wharf Street will be reduced in size to enable a safe work zone to connect the future riverfront road to Wharf Street. This work will take approximately 1-2 days and will involve:

  • accessible footpath relocation
  • site fencing adjustment
  • installation of road barriers.

Wharf Street Temporary Park

Additional improvement works will occur at the Wharf Street Temporary Park to improve access for the community. These works will involve temporary closures of existing parks for short durations. More information and closure dates will be provided on signage at the park.

MacArthur Avenue upgrade (between Finnegan Street and Theodore Street)

From mid‑2026, upgrade works on MacArthur Avenue between Finnegan Street and Theodore Street will commence. These works will require closing the western section of MacArthur Avenue. A temporary road will be created to maintain direct local access for eastern residents and tenancies. More information on the future closure will be provided in future updates.

Theodore Street

Surveying underground services and relocation of gas line work will be undertaken on Theodore Street mid to late April for approximately 7 days and will require a full closure of Theodore Street between MacArthur Avenue and MacArthur Avenue North.

To safely carry out this work, traffic will be diverted and the Theodore Street bus stop will be temporarily relocated to MacArthur Avenue. More information will be provided closer to the works taking place.

MacArthur Avenue (between Finnegan Street and Remora Road)

Potholing survey works are scheduled to take place on the westbound lane of MacArthur Avenue, between Finnegan and Remora Road. While these works are underway, the right turn lane for vehicles turning from MacArthur Avenue into Remora Road will remain open, although the length of the turning lane will be reduced. Please follow the direction of signage and traffic control during this period.

Work impacts

Throughout construction, we will provide notifications of upcoming work. Measures will be in place to monitor our activities and adjust our controls as needed to minimise impact on the community.

  • Traffic changes: Detours and changed conditions may be required near work zones. Please follow the direction of signage and traffic controllers.
  • Noise, dust and vibration: These works will generate noise, dust and vibration.
  • Increased activity: Expect more workers and construction vehicle movements around the precinct. Equipment may include excavators, vac trucks, profilers, haulage vehicles, hand tools, concrete saws, generators, concrete trucks and pumps, water trucks and misting cannons.
  • Utilities: Some activities may temporarily impact utility services. Written notice will be provided at least seven (7) days in advance when disruptions are expected.
  • Hazardous materials: Any hazardous material removal, including asbestos, will be managed safely by qualified personnel.
  • Tree and vegetation removal: Some removal may be required within or near work zones to support safe construction of the SRP.

Work hours

Construction may occur from:

  • 6.30am to 6.00pm Monday to Thursday
  • 6.30am to 4.00pm Fridays and Saturdays, excluding public holidays.
