Notice of applications for preliminary works at Yeerongpilly

29 May 2026

Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) has submitted two applications to the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) seeking approval to carry out preliminary building and restoration works at the Yeerongpilly site.

The proposed works are focused on making buildings safe, secure and weatherproof. This includes demolition of the former hospital block and stables, and partial demolition of the southern wing of the main building, which was significantly damaged by fire.

The applications have been made under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 and relate to staged works as follows:

  • Stage one (initial works)
Maintenance and minor works that can be undertaken under a General Exemption Certificate, alongside early contractor involvement, design investigations, and planning.
  • Stage two (subsequent works)
    • Phase 2: Intermediate works requiring an Exemption Certificate from DETSI
    • Phase 3: Larger-scale works requiring approval under section 71 of the Act (development by the State)

The section 71 application (Phase 3 works) is being assessed by the Queensland Heritage Council, with a final decision to be made by the Minister for Economic Development.

Public notification for the section 71 application is being managed by DETSI and is open from Friday 15 May to Thursday 11 June 2026.

All application materials, including the public notice, Heritage Impact Statement and architectural plans, are available on the Queensland Government website.

In parallel, EDQ has commenced procurement to appoint a specialised contractor under an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) model. Subject to approvals, works are expected to begin in August 2026 and be completed by June 2027.
